They are B-a-a-ack! - Three
or four months ago we reported to you that the
Miami/Dade Expressway Authority was exploring the
idea of elevating NW 119th Street and split the
community in half with this ugly roadway.
There were 3 meetings held before Thanksgiving and
Christmas 2010 and the representatives of the
various home owners organizations and other business
organizations said NO! The vote was 43 to 1 against
this proposal. We were told that the Commissioners
who oversee the MDX, told MDX, that this is a bad
idea. We thought that they were told loud and clear,
that they had received the message and would go
away. But apparently not; Las week this office
received a message from MDX that they are going to
have more meetings and try to resuscitate this bad
idea.

The City of North
Miami Business Development Board had a
meeting with the new City Manager, Russell Benford,
who gave an over all vision of where he would like
the City to focus.
During a Q and A session afterwards the topic of 7th
Ave. came up and how it always seems to be the step
child of North Miami. It was pointed out to him,
that outside of Biscayne Boulevard, we were more
economically viable that any other area in the city,
but got the least attention. It seems all the
developmental ammunition goes to 125th Street and
yet, it never seems to awaken and become a vital
resource for the city.
Based on these comments it was observed by Board
Chairman Mark Wolin, that there ought to be a study
done on 7th Ave. to bring about a plan that might
put our area in step with the economic planning of
the rest of the city. This is a small beginning, but
it is a step in the right direction and may
eventually help our area. Also at this meeting we
expressed to the City Manager that we were opposed
to the City favoring the 119th Expressway idea and
the annexation or 7th Avenues East side up to 163rd
St. as this would bring in vast numbers of
billboards and cut a neighborhood in half. If these
things are done there will never be any way to
salvage the Northwest District.

Recently we
had a "Sunshine Meeting" with Comm. Jordon
(Dist. 1), Comm. Monestime (Dist. 2) and Comm.
Edosnson (Dist. 3) for the purpose of discussing
plans to assure that we get Dist. 1 into our CRA
plan and combine our economic and political
resources for our Northwest Community. There is
evidence that some Miami/Dade Commissioners who
would not like to see us use our money within our
area, but to share it with the rest of the County
who would see to our needs. It is our position that
this hasn't happened in the last 50 years and it
won't happen in the next 50 years!
