One for the good guys! - Chris Marshall of the Broke Spoke Bicycle shop and a long time member had his shop broken into and the thief got 3 bikes and some odds and ends. The thief broke in again, but this time Chris was inside with a phone in one hand talking to a 911 dispatcher and a gun in the other hand. Fortunately for the thief the police arrived before he broke in. The burglar ran but was later caught and with blood samples, he will probably go away for a while. The guy who was caught is a one man crime wave. He has caused a lot of problems in this area before. He also has a long record in Las Vegas for the same crimes and has been in jail here many times. Hopefully they will put him away for a long time. Chris is asking for restitution, which means this guy can not get off parole (that is if he ever gets parole), until he pays back every cent he stole, both in merchandise and physical damages.

CRA News -  There has been two meetings with the 7th Avenue CRA and to date we have signed all agreements with the County and we should be "legal" to start conducting business that benefits 7th Ave. Most of what we can do right now is restricted because we do not have our own administrator to get our ideas in action. But there are some immediate quick victories we can achieve such as street clean up, anti graffiti, cleaning off the many different light poles, cleaning up bad sidewalks, getting after people who have serious zoning violations, etc. When we get an administrator and secretary and a place for an office we can get our a newsletter and get a closer liaison with all the business people. There are 240 businesses and 151 building building and land owners who need to be contacted every time we have something of interest.
On October 21, from 5 - 7 pm, we will have a workshop regarding our budget and the things we would like to accomplish over the near term. The meeting will be held at the Edison/Little River Center, 150 NE 79th Street. We would like to see our business people there to comment on our proposals.

Farmers Market - An idea that is getting a lot of attention over the past few years in areas that are trying to promote neighborhood awareness and cohesiveness, is a fresh foods program and farmers market that happen for 4 - 5 hours each weekend where local produce is sold and flowers and home made crafts are offered. This is a wholesome way to introduce the public to the area and local people have an opportunity to intermingle. Many large cities are having a lot of success with this urban farming idea.

Graffiti Alert - There is a new graffiti tagger in our area and if you are experiencing any problems, give us a call as we have a crew that will block it our for you with a special paint that will not let the tagger's paint bleed through. For those who do not know the difference between a graffiti tagger and a Graffiti Artist, an artist puts up a defined illustration, where as a tagger puts up an almots illegible word or words and he is usually gang connected where as the artist is usually not. Getting it off you building within 24 hours is very important because it takes the tagger that long or longer to get his friends together to brag about his work. After a while they get tired of playing our game and move on.
